The Comfederate States Ship, CSS McRae.
According to my correspondence with the U.S. Naval Museum, they are of the opinion she was named after, Colin McRae. His family immigrated to North Carolina in Colonial America , and later moved to Mississippi. At the out of break of the War of Northern Aggression, Colin left for England and supplied the Confederacy with war material. According to records of the time, he was the main supplier to the Confederacy. He had a death sentence imposed on him after the war and lived in Belize, where and his Brother are buried. His Brother was Governor of Mississippi.
Several years ago a house in Moblie, Alabama was under renovation and a trove of documents where found in the attic. These documents include many from Colins activities during the War of Northern Aggression, as well as family documents, and have been purchased by the Confederate Museum and Relic Room in Columbia , South Carolina.
The McRae Papers, have been archived and are expected to be a significate addition to the history of the American Civil War.
